Renting a Car in Florence: What You Need to Know

  • April 15, 2026

Renting a car in Florence can be a fantastic way to explore Tuscany—whether you’re planning a countryside wine tour, a day trip to Siena, or simply want flexibility during your stay.

But there’s one issue that trips up many visitors: your driver’s license documentation.

Here’s what you need to know before you arrive at the rental counter.

1. Do You Actually Need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Italy?

If you’re visiting Italy from outside the EU/EEA, the short answer is: yes, you should have one.

  • Italian law requires non-EU drivers to carry either:
    • an International Driving Permit (IDP), or
    • an official translation of their license
  • The IDP is not a separate license—it’s simply a standardized translation of your existing license

In practice, enforcement can be inconsistent—but that’s exactly what makes it risky.

👉 You might not be asked for it… until you are.

2. Rental Companies in Florence: Not All Rules Are the Same

Here’s where things get more complicated.

Some rental companies are relaxed. Others are strict.

For example:

  • Europcar explicitly requires an IDP (or equivalent translation) for many non-EU licenses in Italy
  • If you don’t have it, you may be refused the car at pickup
  • They also require:
    • original physical documents (no digital copies)
    • your actual license + translation/IDP together

Even Europcar itself notes that in Italy, drivers from outside the EU often must present both their national license and an IDP

👉 In other words: this is not theoretical—it can directly affect your trip.

3. “But My Friend Rented Without One…”

You’ll hear this a lot—and it’s true.

  • Some travelers report never being asked
  • Some rental desks don’t enforce the rule
  • Others enforce it strictly

The key issue is this:

👉 The requirement exists regardless of whether it’s checked

And more importantly:

  • If you’re stopped by police → you may be fined
  • If you’re in an accident → insurance could be affected

4. The Alternative: A Sworn Translation of Your License

This is where things get interesting (and often overlooked).

Rental companies like Europcar accept:

  • an International Driving Permit, OR
  • an official sworn translation of your license

That means:

👉 You don’t necessarily need an IDP if you have a proper legal translation

This is especially useful if:

  • you didn’t get an IDP before traveling
  • you’re already in Italy
  • you need a fast, compliant solution

5. Practical Tips for Renting a Car in Florence

✔️ Book in advance

Florence is a high-demand city, especially in spring and summer.

✔️ Choose pickup location carefully

  • Airport = easier access, more availability
  • City center = more restrictions (ZTL zones!)

✔️Watch out for ZTL (limited traffic zones)

Driving into central Florence without permission can result in automatic fines.

✔️ Check insurance carefully

Make sure you understand:

  • deductibles
  • coverage for damage/theft
  • what happens if documentation is incomplete

✔️ Bring the right documents

At minimum:

  • passport
  • credit card
  • driver’s license
  • IDP or sworn translation

6. When a Translation Can Save Your Trip

A very common scenario in Florence:

You arrive at the rental desk → everything is fine → then you’re asked for an IDP you don’t have.

At that point, your options are limited.

This is why many travelers now choose to arrange a sworn translation in advance or locally.

It’s a simple document, but it can make the difference between:

  • driving through Tuscany
  • or walking away from the counter

Avoiding Unexpected Charges for Damage

Before driving away, take a few minutes to inspect the car carefully and document everything. Most rental agencies in Florence will note existing damage on the contract, but it’s your responsibility to make sure nothing is missed. Take clear photos or videos of the car from all angles—including scratches, dents, wheels, mirrors, and the interior—and make sure these match the condition report. When you return the car, companies may charge for even minor damage if it wasn’t recorded beforehand. It’s also a good idea to check what your insurance actually covers (especially deductibles and exclusions), since basic coverage in Italy often comes with a high excess. A few minutes of documentation at pickup can save you from unexpected charges or disputes later on.
