If you are planning to drive in Italy with a foreign driver’s license, you may need more than your original license.
Depending on where your license was issued and whether you are visiting Italy or are a resident, you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official Italian translation of your driver’s license.
The rules can be confusing, particularly for drivers from the United States, Canada, Australia and other non-EU countries. This guide explains the requirements for driving legally in Italy in 2026 and the difference between an IDP and an official or sworn translation.
Can I Drive in Italy With a Foreign Driver’s License?
Yes, but the requirements depend primarily on whether your license was issued in an EU/EEA country or a non-EU/EEA country.
EU and EEA Driver’s Licenses
Driver’s licenses issued by EU and EEA countries are generally recognised in Italy.
If you are visiting Italy temporarily with a valid EU/EEA license, you normally do not need an International Driving Permit or an Italian translation.
Different rules apply if you become resident in Italy, particularly when your license has no expiry date or has a validity period longer than that permitted under EU rules.
Non-EU Driver’s Licenses
If your license was issued outside the EU or EEA, additional documentation is generally required.
According to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, holders of a valid non-EU/EEA license may drive in Italy with their foreign license accompanied by either:
- an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by the country that issued the license; or
- an official Italian translation of the foreign driver’s license.
For people who become resident in Italy, this arrangement is generally valid for up to one year from the date Italian residence is declared.
After that period, different rules apply.
Do Americans Need an International Driving Permit in Italy?
If you have a U.S. driver’s license, you should not assume that the American license alone is sufficient documentation for driving in Italy.
A U.S. license is a non-EU license. To comply with Italian requirements, it should be accompanied by the appropriate additional documentation, such as an International Driving Permit or a sworn Italian translation.
This is important even though an American license contains information that may appear easy to understand.
What Is an International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit, commonly called an IDP, is a standardised document designed to make the information on a national driver’s license understandable to authorities in other countries.
An IDP does not replace your original driver’s license.
It must be used together with the valid license issued by your home country.
International driving permits are based on international conventions, principally the 1949 Geneva Convention and the 1968 Vienna Convention. Different countries recognise different versions, so travellers should verify the appropriate permit before travelling.
An IDP is normally obtained in the country where your driver’s license was issued.
Is an IDP the Same as an Italian Translation of My Driver’s License?
No.
An International Driving Permit and an official Italian translation are two different documents, although they can serve a similar purpose in certain circumstances.
An IDP is an internationally standardised document obtained through an authorised organisation in the country that issued your license.
An official Italian translation, on the other hand, is a complete translation of your foreign license into Italian that meets the requirements established by the Italian authorities.
You generally do not need both when Italian law permits either an IDP or an official translation. However, the requirements of a particular administrative procedure, authority or rental company may differ, so it is always advisable to check what is required for your specific situation.
What Is an Official Translation of a Driver’s License in Italy?
The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport defines an official translation of a foreign driver’s license as a complete translation into Italian that is certified as corresponding to the foreign text.
One of the ways this can be done in Italy is through a translator who assumes responsibility for the translation and formally swears to its accuracy before an authorized public official.
This procedure is commonly known in Italian as a traduzione asseverata or traduzione giurata (sworn translation).
For this reason, simply translating the information on your license yourself or using an online translation tool does not produce an official translation for Italian administrative purposes.
Do Tourists Need a Sworn Translation to Drive in Italy?
A non-EU visitor needs the appropriate documentation to accompany their foreign license, but that does not necessarily mean that every tourist must obtain a sworn translation.
For many travellers, an International Driving Permit obtained before travelling to Italy is the easiest and least expensive option.
An official Italian translation is an alternative if the driver has not had time to get an IDP.
If you are already in Italy without an IDP and need documentation for your foreign license, it is particularly important to verify the requirements that apply to your situation before driving.
Can I Use a U.S. Driver’s License After Becoming Resident in Italy?
Only for a limited period.
Under the current rules, a person holding a valid non-EU/EEA driver’s license may generally continue driving in Italy for up to one year after establishing residence, provided the foreign license is accompanied by an International Driving Permit or an official Italian translation.
After one year, the foreign license can no longer simply be used to continue driving in Italy.
At that point, whether you can convert the license into an Italian one depends on whether Italy has a reciprocity agreement with the country that issued your license.
Can I Convert a U.S. Driver’s License Into an Italian License?
For most U.S. license holders, no.
As of 2026, Italy does not have a general reciprocity agreement allowing ordinary U.S. driver’s licenses to be converted directly into Italian licenses.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport lists the United States as eligible for conversion only in limited circumstances involving diplomatic personnel and their family members.
This means that an American who becomes resident in Italy can generally use a valid U.S. license with the required accompanying documentation during the first year of residence, but cannot simply exchange it for an Italian license after that period.
In most cases, a U.S. license holder who wants to continue driving after the one-year period will need to obtain an Italian driver’s license by following the applicable Italian licensing and examination procedure.
Which Foreign Driver’s Licenses Can Be Converted in Italy?
Italy has reciprocity agreements with a number of non-EU countries.
As of 2026, the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport lists countries including Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Israel, Morocco, Moldova, Serbia, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, among others.
The list and the conditions attached to individual agreements can change.
Some agreements also impose deadlines based on how long the driver has been resident in Italy. For this reason, you should always check the current Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport requirements before beginning a license-conversion procedure.
Do I Need a Translation to Convert My Foreign License?
Possibly.
For the conversion of some non-EU licenses, the Italian Motorizzazione Civile requires an official translation of the foreign driver’s license.
The exact documentation depends on the country that issued the license and the applicable reciprocity agreement.
A translation used for a formal conversion procedure should therefore be prepared according to the requirements of the Italian authority receiving the application.
What Information Is Included in a Driver’s License Translation?
An official translation should reproduce the relevant information appearing on the original license, which may include:
- the holder’s full name;
- date and place of birth;
- license number;
- issue and expiry dates;
- issuing authority;
- vehicle categories or classes;
- restrictions or endorsements; and
- other information or codes appearing on the license.
Because licenses vary considerably between countries — and even between U.S. states — accurately interpreting categories, abbreviations and administrative terminology is an important part of the translation process.
Can I Get My Driver’s License Translated After I Arrive in Italy?
Yes.
If you are already in Italy and need an official Italian translation of your foreign driver’s license, the translation can be prepared in Italy.
For a sworn driver’s license translation, the completed Italian translation is formally sworn before the appropriate Italian public official, creating an official translation suitable for purposes for which an asseverazione is required.
This can be especially useful for people who have already arrived in Italy without obtaining an IDP in their home country.
IDP or Sworn Translation: Which Should I Get?
The best option depends on your circumstances.
If you are planning a holiday in Italy and have not yet left your home country, obtaining the appropriate International Driving Permit before travelling may be the simplest solution.
If you are already in Italy, need an Italian-language document, or have been specifically asked for an official or sworn translation by an Italian authority, an official Italian translation of your driver’s license may be the appropriate option.
If you are resident in Italy, remember that neither an IDP nor a translation extends the general one-year period during which a non-EU license can be used after establishing residence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive in Italy with just my American driver’s license?
A U.S. license by itself should not be assumed to satisfy the documentation requirements for driving in Italy. A valid non-EU license should generally be accompanied by an International Driving Permit or an official Italian translation.
Is an International Driving Permit mandatory in Italy?
For non-EU/EEA licenses, Italian rules provide for the foreign license to be accompanied by an International Driving Permit or an official Italian translation. Which option is most practical depends on your circumstances.
Can I get an IDP after arriving in Italy?
An IDP is normally issued through the appropriate authorised organisation associated with the country that issued your driver’s license. If you are already in Italy without one, an official Italian translation may be an alternative where permitted by Italian law.
Does a sworn translation replace my original license?
No. The translation accompanies the original foreign driver’s license; it does not become a driver’s license itself.
How long can I drive in Italy after becoming resident?
If your license was issued by a non-EU/EEA country, you can generally drive using the valid foreign license and the required accompanying documentation for up to one year after establishing residence in Italy.
Can Americans convert their license in Italy?
Ordinary U.S. driver’s licenses are not currently covered by a general U.S.–Italy conversion agreement. The limited conversion provision for U.S. licenses applies to diplomatic personnel and their family members.
