How to Apply for Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa

  • April 13, 2026

If you’re a remote worker dreaming of living in Italy, the Digital Nomad Visa could be your gateway to setting up legally in Italy.

Introduced to attract highly skilled remote professionals, this visa allows non-EU citizens to legally live and work in Italy while working for clients or employers abroad.

But while the idea is simple, the application process is document-heavy—and this is where many applicants get stuck, especially when it comes to translations.

Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide.

Who Can Apply for the Digital Nomad Visa?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are a non-EU citizen
  • Work remotely (freelancer or employee)
  • Have highly skilled professional experience
  • Meet a minimum income threshold (approx. €28,000+ per year, subject to updates)
  • Have valid health insurance
  • Can show accommodation in Italy

Step-by-Step: How to Apply

1. Gather Your Core Documents

You’ll need to prepare:

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of remote work (contract or employer letter)
  • Proof of income
  • CV and qualifications
  • Health insurance
  • Proof of accommodation in Italy
  • Clean criminal record certificate

👉 Important: Many of these documents are issued outside Italy and may require translation.

2. Get Your Documents Legalized

Depending on your country, documents may need:

  • Apostille (e.g. US, UK, Canada, Australia)
  • Or consular legalization

This step confirms your documents are valid for use in Italy.

3. Translate Required Documents into Italian

This is where many applications are delayed or rejected. We can help you out here at Hurley Certified Translation.

Typically requiring certified translation:

  • Criminal background check
  • University degrees / diplomas
  • Employment contracts or client agreements
  • Proof of income (tax returns, accountant letters)
  • Birth certificate (sometimes requested later for residency)

👉 Italian authorities usually require official sworn translations into Italian

4. Apply at the Italian Consulate

Submit your application to the Italian consulate in your home country.

Processing times vary, but expect:

  • Several weeks to a few months
  • Possible requests for additional documents

5. Enter Italy and Apply for a Residence Permit

Once approved:

  • Enter Italy on your visa
  • Apply for a permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) within 8 days

Again, you may need:

  • Translated documents (if not already submitted)
  • Copies of your visa application materials

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Submitting documents in English only

Even if accepted initially, authorities in Italy (Questura, Comune) often require sworn Italian translations later.

❌ Using non-certified translations

Google Translate or do-it-yourself translations are not accepted

❌ Waiting too long to translate

Translation delays are one of the top reasons applications stall.
